Berlin Expands Refugees Registration

BERLIN, GERMANY - OCTOBER 21: A man holds a form while like other migrants seeking refugee status wait to register outside the Central Registration Office for Asylum Seekers (Zentrale Aufnahmestelle fuer Asylbewerber, or ZAA) of the State Office for Health and Social Services (Landesamt fuer Gesundheit und Soziales, or LAGeSo) on October 21, 2015 in Berlin, Germany. Berlin recently expanded its registration system for asylum-applicants with a second center. Once initially registered at LAGeSO, applicants are taken by bus to the new center where they can apply for refugee status and receive job counseling all within the same day in a process that was previously more arduous. The city is struggling to process large numbers of applicants who often wait for days on end outside the main LAGeSO building in conditions that have prompted protests by volunteer aid groups.
